Bufferstrip
A bufferstrip is a band of vegetative th
at is established along a
surface water source to protect it
from contamination. Contamination can be in the form of sediment
(soil erosion) and leeching of pesticides, manure or fertilizer. By
protecting the surface water source from contamination, the strip will
be improving water quality at the same time.
Wildlife also benefit from the development of a bufferstrip
system. It provides them with a new habitat as well as a new food
source. It’s also a useful tool for weed management, by minimize the
presents of noxious weeds. Bufferstrips provide a cover along
streambanks, minimizing destabilization and preventing further water
contamination.
