Riparian Fencing

Riparian areas are the strips of land that run between the wetlands (lakes, rivers, streams and ponds) and the uplands (crops or other type of vegetation).  These lush, green areas only accumulate to roughly 4% of the total land cover in Manitoba.  Astonishing, roughly 80% of animal life depend on these areas for food, cover, and/or water.

By fencing off riparian areas, landowners will be protecting their livestock and improving their herd health by ensure that the water they consume is safe.  Another benefit to livestock is that farmers will no longer have to worry about pulling another cow or calf out of the mud!  There are also several benefits to the environment; protecting the surface water from contamination, providing a habitat for wildlife and protecting the streambank from destabilization.  The growth of trees and grasses in riparian areas will help to reduce floodwater velocity, resulting in a lower flood peak downstream.  Without these trees and grasses, major flooding and massive destruction may occur.
